Removing Hard Water Stains – Natural Solution
It isn’t easy keeping a house spotless these days. There is so much ‘stuff’ in our atmosphere…pesticides, smoke, and other nasties…that we even have trouble keeping ourselves, and our clothes, clean. And, it is just as frustrating when it comes to keeping bathrooms and kitchens dirt free without further polluting the environment.
An especially difficult chore for the modern householder is that of keeping bath tubs and shower doors free from hard water stains and soap scum. In these days of natural, or ‘green’, products — we do not really need to use harsh chemical cleaners anyway. How can we do our bit in causing less damage to the planet?
The first step would be to use the old standby…vinegar. Everyone probably has a bottle of vinegar in the kitchen cupboard, so why not scrap the deep-cleaning products that are so hard on the environment, not to mention one’s hands. Just pour some vinegar into a spray bottle, cover the hard water stained area to be cleaned, and let it soak in for a few minutes. Oftentimes, this is enough to remove hard water stains and a good scrubbing followed by a warm water rinse should whisk them away.
If for any reason that doesn’t remove hard water stains, go to the laundry room and grab a dryer sheet like Bounce, dampen in warm water and glide the moistened sheet across the shower doors. It won’t work like magic, but it will be pretty close. Follow with a good rinse (warm water again), and the stains should be gone.
Then there is that many-purpose kitchen product …baking soda. It keeps your refrigerator smelling sweet, puts out kitchen grease fires, and can be used in place of toothpaste. Put some on a damp cloth and go to work on the stubborn spots. This should remove hard water stains without too much scrubbing. Always rinse with warm water.
After you have successfully removed hard water stains from tub and shower, spraying on a light film of WD 40 lubricant should keep the surfaces free of stains for a while.
These tips have been used by many happy householders and should be all one needs to do the job. The extra bonus is saving money. Baking soda and vinegar are much less expensive than high-powered commercial brands. Remove hard water stains and prevent them from returning and your life will be a little bit easier, at least in one area!

While WD-40 does seem to help keep hard water stains away longer, it really stinks when you’re using it and you can’t get the smell out of the bathroom for days. The vinegar stinks, but the smell doesn’t linger as long.
Investing in a good shower filter is the better way to go — you feel a lot better after taking a shower (clean, actually), and it’s easier than trying to keep the hard water stains at bay or spraying down your shower doors or tub walls every month or so with WD40.
